Zambales: Anawangin Cove in San Antonio, Zambales

The famed beauty of Anawangin Cove has spread far and wide as being one of the best beaches in the country. And we were finally there, well almost. It was an exhausting trek to Anawangin Cove. But the hike to the beach was not yet over. At sea level, we still had to navigate a kilometer along a dry river bed.

But the bizarre landscape felt mysterious in a way. It didn't look like I was in the Philippines with all the pine trees right beside the beach. Walking the dry river bed with that pyramid-like mountain in the background added an eerie feeling to an already uncanny trek. Anawangin got its name from nuang the Ilocano word for carabao since there is an abundance of it there. Remember the wild carabao?

After several meters under the hot summer sun trekking on the rocks, we finally made it to the shady cluster of pine trees. I wonder how they got there. Our guide said many were planted after the Mount Pinatubo eruption but he added the trees were there even before. To add to the mystique were crystal clear streams that reflected the tall pine trees on the surface like you were in some enchanted forest. And to think this whole area was devastated in 1991. It just shows how fast nature heals itself.

And then the beach finally appeared. It was a long strip of near-white volcanic sand dumped by Mount Pinatubo. The locals said that before the eruption, this area was mostly rock. The sand from Mount Pinatubo had created a wonderful playground for beach lovers. And it's even more wonderful that the locals take good care of it. So whatever they charge you, they most probably deserve it.

After taking photos, I went for a dip in the beach. The cool water washed away all the exhaustion from the climb, all the stress from school. It was a great way to welcome the summer!

How to get there
You can take any bus from Manila to Iba or Sta. Cruz, Zambales. Buses to Zambales leave the Victory Liner stations in Caloocan (about 23 trips from 5 a.m. to 12 midnight) and Pasay (four trips from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.) Fare to San Antonio is about PHP235.

Get off at the town proper of San Antonio and charter a tricycle to take you to the jump-off point in Pundaquit. That's about PHP50 per person or PHP200 per tricycle. Boat rentals to Anawangin and the nearby islands range from PHP800 to PHP1200 depending on your itinerary.

Where to stay
While many visitors to Anawangin camp there for the night, there are a lot of accommodations available in Pundaquit:

Punta de Uian
+63 918 888UIAN (8426)
+63 918 800UIAN (8426)

Nora Resort
+63 919 6374917

  6. It was a day trip. We arrived at 4:30 a.m. for the hike to Anawangin via Mt. Anawangin. That was about 5 hours. We had pre-arranged a boat to pick us up at Anawangin to bring us to Capones and back to Pundaquit. We spent about P1000 for the boat and P500 for the guide.

  7. hmm, P50/head or P200 for a tricycle ride is expensive, the running rate from the market to pundaquit is only P20 per head, maximum of four persons per tricycle, but we usually give the driver P100 for 4 pax.

  14. Yes, you can hire a pump boat directly to Anawangin from Pundaquit. You should budget up to P1200 for a boat which is good for four people.

we're planning to go there kasi po sa monday na. 2 lang po kami originally, ang quoted price po kasi samen nung 2 pa lang kami na pupunta ay 1800 daw.

then nakapagyaya po kasi ako ng 3 more friends, so 5 na kami.

feeling ko kasi yung 1800, mahal na. so baka meron pa po akong mahanap na mas mura.

    Hi Guys,

I have been reading a lot of things about anawangin. Surely it is a paradise. Other people are hesitant to go because of untoward incidents that had happened.

I'm pretty sure that you have heard there types of scenarios. they happen in gallera, anawangin, siargao, etc... I don't want to blame untoward scenarios to these beautiful places. The beach, the mountains, or even in your own house has its dangers.

Persons drown because of strong underwater currents, undertows, and popular known as riptides. They can occur anywhere waves are breaking on shore.

I know a number of people has lost their lives due to this. They are dangerous but are relatively easy to escape if you stay calm. I think if people only knew what to do, there would be a lot less deaths. Here are some websites I found on how to survive an underwater current hope this helps and please pass to others:

hello avid readers and fellow adventurers who wanted to try something new. Going to Anawangin such a memorable experience. We've been there with my friends all four of us and would you believe we are in our 40s. It was last February19-21,2010. We took our ride in Victory Liner Pasay the last rip is 12 pm so be there around 8 pm for the tickets por you ll end up chance passengers like us and gonna force to take the 5 am ride. ticket costs P270/person. Take the Iba Zambales bus. Will take you 3 and half ride to san antonio from ther take the tricycle that would costP30/person to pundaquit beach we you will take a boat that would cost P200 per person
to and fro from the island. Travel takes 30 mins and entrance in the island will charge you P100 per person i would advised you take the left side of the beach amenities are better especially the comfort rooms. Beware swimming on the left side of the beach facing the sea many people reported drowned there because of strong underwater current. There are small stores there but the commodities are expensive. better bring your own food and water. nOW THERE .... HAPPY CAMPING!!!!

5 days will be expensive besides there are no vendors around and hiring a boatman or guide from pundaquit to bring goods for your stay would be so expensive and the water source is not potable because it comes from deep well but kung rockstar ka at mala jackass sa adventure i think tatagal nmn kahit kapusin ng supplies... kami nga 1 1/2 day walang pagkain eh nakatagal hahahaha basta may tubig lng alak at yosi game on....

Is it possible to set a bonfire in the island?
Is it okay to bring our own gas stove, also with the gasul?
If we stay there for overnight and camping for 2days and 1 night it would be safe for us? No dangerous animals will be attack us? No "Magnanakaw"?

  101. My friends and I went to Anawangin last May of 2011 and it was really a superb experience.

We took a bus in Caloocan (Victory Liner) and left at around 11:30pm and arrived in San Antonio at 3am.We've waited for the local market to open before going to Pundaquit to meet the boat owner (Ate Liezel).

I would say she's definitely accomodating. We got a good price for the boat travel (3days,2night; island hopping to Camara and Capones islands on the 2nd day). The kitchen utensils they provided were free of charge and they also offer tent rentals. We even had time to use their bathrooms before we finally left Pundaquit.

We took a bus to Olongapo and dropped off at the city then took Victory bus back to Manila. It was everyones's first-time experience and we did enjoy the adventure.

Our total expenses is a little less than 1700/pax which includes transpo, camp fees and food.

Make sure to bring things that you need to camp (machete, knives, kerosene, lighter,GUITAR :D,etc.).

we had a wonderful time in anawangin and i must admit anawangin is far more beautiful than boracay kasi hindi pa siya gaanong commercialized. maganda ung feeling na parang malayo ka sa sibilisasyon.anyways,we hiked mt. pundaquit and had a 6 long hours of trekking.whew! buti na lang at mababait at pasensosyo ang mga guide namin. sila na din mismo nagdala ng mga bags namin. pagbaba ng anawangin,it was an awesome experience! sobrang linaw ng tubig at hinding hindi ka magsasawang bumalik. next time,we will definitely be back kasama naman ang family namin.

i would just like to thank yung mga taong tumulong sa amin sa aming stay sa anawangin. from our guide to our boatman and sa caretaker sa anawangin. thank you po kuya jay-r agasa sa pag-asikaso at pag-assist samin! nag-enjoy kami ng sobra! ito contact number ni kuya jay-r:09173809104.. para my contact na kayo pagdating niyo sa pundakit.
